Imus Pisses Off Rutgers With "Nappy-Headed Ho" Comment

(New York) - Radio talk show host and MSNBC personality Don Imus has ticked off Rutgers University.

On his "Imus In The Morning" show Thursday, he referred to the Rutgers women's basketball team as "nappy-headed hos."

The conversation with fill-in sports anchor Sid Rosenberg came the morning after the Women's NCAA Championship game.

Imus started out talking about the Rutgers team as, "some rough girls from Rutgers. They got tattoos," and then went on to call them "some nappy-headed hos."

He compared them to the Tennessee team, saying "The girls from Tennessee -- they all looked cute."

The conversation then went on to compare the game to "the jigaboos versus the wannabes." Media Matters reported that the show's executive producer, Bernard McGuirk, made that comment.

Imus has more to say about those remarks, according to the New York Times. Imus said people should relax and not worry about "some idiot comment meant to be amusing."

A Rutgers spokesperson issued a statement saying, "We agree with Mr. Imus that this was, in his own words, an 'idiot comment.' We are very proud of the success of the Rutgers women's basketball team. Coach Stringer and the Rutgers players are outstanding ambassadors for this great institution."

(London) - The 15 British sailors and Royal Marines freed by Iran returned to Britain Thursday after 13 days in captivity. The British Airways plane with the 14 men and one woman sailor on board touched down at London's Heathrow airport around
noon GMT.

The naval personnel were immediately flown to a Royal Marines base in Devon for debriefing sessions. Prime Minister Tony Blair said Britain was "rejoicing" at the sailors' return.

But referring to news from Iraq Thursday of the death of four British soldiers in a roadside bomb attack near Basra, he said the joy was tempered by the "sober and ugly reality of what is happening through terrorism in Iraq."

Keith Richards: I Did Not Snort My Own Father's Ashes

C Goodman

Okay, rocker Keith Richards has done a lot of crazy things in his day. But the Rolling Stones guitarist says snorting his own father's ashes isn't one of them. Media outlets around the world ran with a story yesterday published in a London music magazine where Richards is quoted saying: "The strangest thing I've tried to snort? My father. I snorted my father. He was cremated and I couldn't resist grinding him up with a little bit of blow ... . It went down pretty well, and I'm still alive."

Everyone from AP and Reuters to MSNBC and the Drudge Report picked up the quote, never bothering to check the facts. When MTV's Kurt Loder contacted reps for Richards, they told him that the comment was made "in jest" and they "can't believe anyone took [it] seriously."

Earlier today, Richards released a statement himself on the Rolling Stones' website saying that "the complete story (was) lost in the usual slanting."

Richards added, quote, "The truth of the matter is that I planted a sturdy English Oak. I took the lid off the box of ashes, and he is now growing oak trees and would love me for it!!! I was trying to say how tight Bert and I were. That tight!!! I wouldn't take cocaine at this point in my life unless I wished to commit suicide."

Whether he did or not, this story is destined to be one of those urban legends that won't die for many years to come.
